Five fantastic packaging development ideas for 2017

The packaging development and design field is changing fast. Packaging developers are always hungry for new ideas to keep up to date with the latest trends and innovations. Here, we highlight five creative points for marketing teams and packaging designers, in the hope that they draw inspiration from these packaging development practices in the coming year.

1.     Salute the cardboard pouch

Cardboard pouches have existed in the packaging world from its beginnings. However, over the years, they have somehow been forgotten by many packaging designers and developers. Yet there is no logical reason to underestimate the cardboard pouch – quite the opposite! A cardboard pouch can make any small item or food product look compact and elegant. Moreover, the pouch is an economical solution as it is generally more than twice as cheap as a cardboard box, while still leaving room for various prepress and printing options.

2.     Dedicated packaging for online stores

As the proportion of e-commerce is growing fast and competition is getting stronger each year, it is good idea for e-retailers to offer a standout shopping experience for their customers. In this regard, we feel dedicated packaging is the way to go. The FEFCO catalogue offers standard packaging designs, allowing e-retailers to pick their favourites. Moreover, each of the FEFCO catalogue packages can be produced in different sizes.

3.     Packaging with natural looks is always in style

Packaging with an unadulterated look is the clear choice if the product is natural or environmentally friendly. Uncoated cardboard as a packaging material is classic and timeless, standing out among hundreds of multicolour packages. Genuine cardboard gives an impression that the packaging is created with minimal environmental impact. If the product is high-end, the rough cardboard can be combined with foil or exquisite die cutting for a superlative finish.

We developed this natural cardboard packaging for Estonian cider producer. The subtle and elegant touch is provided by using foil printing. The aim of the die-cut square is to highlight the product inside the box, while the box itself is made of E-flute corrugated board.

4.     Symbols sell

Symbols have been a staple of packaging, marketing and advertising for centuries. Therefore, packaging which evokes a familiar and positive image in the consumer’s mind is imperative. Finding this instantly recognisable symbol may, however, be sometimes hard. What do you think of when you think of cheese?

This is cheese packaging we developed for an Estonian dairy company. Many people associate a sphere or a ball with a piece of cheese. The packaging thus follows this shape, as the product inside is a piece of cheese cut from a huge cheese ball.

5.     Packaging inside of packaging inside of packaging!

The style needs to be consistent to build a strong brand. Therefore, individual packaging should work together with the group packaging which may be inside the multipack. In doing so, the multipack or overpack will thus also represent the brand values.

As packaging for packaging, we produced group packaging, which is also used as a display for natural sweets. The cardboard display looks unadulterated because the product inside it is also natural – the Estonian sweet Ampstükk does not contain any additives or colouring agents.
